He completed his MBBS from Medical College, Rohtak in 1965 and MD(Medicine) from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research Chandigarh in 1968.

Dr. G.L. Avasthi was also a visiting professor in Department of Pulmonology, School of Medicine, West Virginia University, Morgantown, , USA (July 31, Aug 15, 2000). He was medical Advisor of Union Services Commission, Govt. of India, New Delhi (1991) and President of Indian Association of Clinical Medicine for the year 2007-2008.
